I was the heart-led, visionary leader for 13 years, who wanted to be everything to everyone.
This made me a respected, well-loved leader, but also a leader who had an addiction to being the 'heroic individual'. The individual whose job it was to save others; save them from their personal and professional problems, save them from extra work and stress and from having to take responsibility. It was only when I allowed myself to be truly seen by a professional coach, and saw my leadership through a new lens, that I realised this had led me down the path to burnout and I had unintentionally created ceilings for my staff that limited their growth and aspirations.
On reflection, the biggest mistake I made as a leader was believing others needing saving. Through extensive research and training, and now as a coach, my perception and view has altered dramatically. It is vital as leaders that we see others as wholly capable; capable of creating and actioning aspirational goals, capable of finding a path to success that they can travel along, and capable of more than we imagine if we create a culture of trust, ownership and accountability.
Sikhona is a Zulu greeting meaning 'I am here to be seen'. When I engage with clients, it is my role to create a safe, supportive space where leaders can remove their masks and allow themselves to be truly seen. The return greeting is Sawubona, meaning 'I see you'. As a coach I see you with no judgement and no preconceptions. I see you as wholly capable and accept you for where you are at this moment in time. I will work with you to facilitate choice and control to provide you with valuable insight and a new lens on leadership.
I was fortunate enough to be seen by a coach, who challenged me to face the reality of where I was and to realise that there was a choice. Choice brings control and my mission is to bring person-centred heart-led coaching to leaders to uncover choices and options to help them navigate the challenging leadership landscape.
